Gene Hyche Writes: It makes me sad to inform you that one of
our older MMI "boys" has passed away. Harold Gray Carter has passed
away in Birmingham.
Gray was responsible, many times, for sponsoring the MMI Table Talk
get together's weekly at the Vestavia Country Club. He was also an
original and dedicated White Knight in 1950. Among other things he was
also on the Tennis team from MMI.
Anita and the family will hold a Memorial for Gray at Saint Thomas

Robert P. (Pete) Findlay White Knight Commander 1972, MMI Cadet Brigade
Commander 1973

On January 31, 2001, I received the sad news that my great
friend and fellow White Knight, Pete Findlay, had passed away on January 30,
2001. This was quite a shock to me as well as to all who knew Pete.
Today my wife, Angela, and I drove from Columbus, Georgia
to Birmingham, Alabama to honor Pete's life and to bid a final farewell to a
great man. Prior to the graveside service, I was asked if I would read a
small eulogy written by Pete's friend and mine, Pat
Kelley, White Knight Commander,
1973. Pat described his first memories of Pete as a cadet leader at
MMI inspecting, correcting and teaching new cadets what would be expected of
them. Pat also described how Pete never would accept second best.
Everything had to be exact and precise. He went on to write about Pete and
his passion for the White Knights and MMI and that there are few others who have
a greater love for either.
Pat's description of Pete Findlay could never have been
more accurate in respect to the profound impact that Pete Findlay had on the
life of those whom he served, taught, trained, mentored and lead.
As I read Pat's notes, I was reminded of the impact that
Pete Findlay had on my life as a cadet, Army Officer and individual.
As a leader, Pete instilled in me the value of teamwork, discipline, and
perfection. As an individual, Pete taught me the value of friendship.
During the White Knight 50th Anniversary planning, Pete
called me to offer his help in locating former White Knights. It seemed
like Pete knew everyone and where they could be found. Over the years,
Pete had maintained his MMI friendships. It is no wonder he knew so many,
Pete spent six years at MMI as a cadet.
Today, at his graveside, Pete's friends and family
listened as I read Pat's note. I could tell by the tears and the shaking
of heads, Pat was right. Pete Findlay was an inspiration to all who came
in contact with him.
Pete Findlay, from your MMI friends, thank you for your
life. Thank you for the impact that you have had on each of us.
Thank you for your outstanding Ambassadorship for MMI and thank you for your
great love of the White Knights. Most of all, thank you for your
friendship.
I will never forget you! ESA
Rodney B. Wilkerson WK '74
P.S: I am sure that Pete and Saint Peter are having a long discussion
about the new inspection standards at the Pearly Gates. Or is it Saint
Pete?
